Transcription systems
Hunting for an IIC quote | Rob Salter | November 16th, 1999
Dear IIC participants,
I need your help if you happen to know the following:
I am trying to hunt down a reference in the units. I have it in my notes but I can't find it in the units. My quotation is taken from Atkinson 1988, but I can't find that in the list of references right now. The quotation is about transcription devices and how conversation analysis does not usually employ great delicacy with regard to most features of speech.
If you know what I am talking about I would be most grateful as this detail is holding my handing it in.
Best,
Rob
Re: IIC transcription quote | Keith Richards | November 17th, 1999
Hi,
Just in case anyone is busting a gut trying to find the reference Rob mentioned, it MIGHT be that the date is wrong, but the subject is interesting and could be useful to others when it comes to the assignment. I can't find any reference to an Atkinson 1988 (but if anyone else has, please let me know), but the following quote seems to fit pretty well:
"At the risk of stating the obvious, conversation analysts do not claim that the transcription system captures the details of a tape recording in all its particularities, or that a transcript should (or ever could) be viewed as a literal representation of, or observationally adequate substitute for, the data under analysis. Like all transcription systems, the one used in this book is necessarily selective. The fact that publication conventions allow for the inclusion only of data extracts in written form should therefore not lead readers to the conclusion that the analyses are based exclusively on an inspection of transcripts conducted independently of direct reference to the original recordings."
Heritage, J. & Atkinson J. M. 1984. Introduction, in J. M. Atkinson & J. Heritage (Eds) "Structures of Social Action" pp1-15 Cambridge: CUP Page 12.
Thought it was worth passing on. Thanks to Rob for bringing up the issue.
Cheers
Keith
