Books for CSD & MAP | Jenny in Cyprus | June 24th, 2003

I'm about to embark on CSD & MAP simultaneously & would like input from anyone out there who's done these modules on which of the recommended books are worth buying. In earlier modules, I've found one or two books really useful & others I've hardly touched.

All comments welcome. Thanks.

Hi Jenny,

I can share my experience on MAP. I found Brian Tomlison's "Materials Development in Language teaching" (CUP) really great. I consider it one of the best books I have ever read.

Alan Cunningsworth's "Choosing Your Coursebook" (Macmillan Heinemann) is clear & well written, but, in my opinion, does not give much to those who already have experience in this field. If you still want to read it, I would be ready to exchange it with another book or sell it second hand.

Hi Jenny in Cyprus,

I agree that the Tomlinson is a must have. I also found Jack Richards's "Curriculum Development in Language Teaching" (CUP, 2001) very useful for CSD.

Have fun.

Hi Jenny,

I haven't done MAP yet, but for what it's worth, I thought this book was great: "Materials Evaluation and Design for Language Teaching," by Ian McGrath (2002 Edinburgh Univ. Press). Very readable.
