language preference survey
Survey of Language use & preference | Simon Cole | December 9th, 2002
Dear fellow participants,
As part of my master's dissertation, I'm looking into language use and preference. Without describing the purpose (for fear it would skew the results), I would like to invite you to do a survey (below). It's kind of fun (solve the riddle!). If you have friends, family or colleagues in your address book you are willing to pass the survey on to via email, I will be very grateful, because I'm interested in everyone's response, not just language teachers. I'm also interested in your students' response so there's an easier version of the survey below (you can do it if the first one is too difficult for you!). If you care to copy it and have your students do it, I will be ecstatic. (Please contact me about getting the results back, etc.) If you're interested in the results, let me know when you give me your return(s) and I will send you a report. If you would like me to send the surveys as an attachment, please ask.
Thanks friends!
Simon Cole,

SURVEY OF LANGUAGE USE AND PREFERENCE
This survey is part of my studies toward a master's degree.
Please do the following exercises in order. Write your answer to each question before you read the next one. If you can't do one, leave it blank and go on to the next one, but don't go back.
1. Describe what a person does when a fire gets out of control. Write a sentence.
2. Fill in missing word(s) in the following passages. You may change other parts of the passage if you want to, but don't go back and change your answers.
a. Medical schools always claim to prepare their graduates for the real world. However, each nurse I spoke _____ said there was something _____ was completely unprepared for in _____ first month _____ work.
b. Attention all passengers. _____ to bad weather, all flights in the Osaka area have been ______. Passengers are requested to _____ to the check-in counter to arrange for re-routing.
c. People sometimes do dangerous and scary jobs alone. For _____, when a police officer meets a violent person, _____can call for help, _____ it takes time for the help to arrive. When a window cleaner works on a building, _____ only has a thin rope holding _____ up.
2. A man and his son are driving along a road when they suddenly crash and are injured. An ambulance arrives at the scene of the accident and takes them to hospital. While the man is being treated, his son is taken to an operating theater. The surgeon looks at the boy and says, "I can't operate on this boy. He's my son."
How is this possible?
4. Fill in the missing words without changing any other parts. Which sentence is the best, in your opinion? Number them 1 - 4 (1 = best).
__ A teacher with a blind student in class will try to adapt the lessons to accommodate blindness.
__ Teachers with blind students in their classes will try to adapt their lessons to accommodate them.

__ A teacher with a blind student in class will.
5. Please complete the following sentences about yourself.

My first language is~.
Thank you very much for taking the time to complete this survey.
