accessing online journals via athens

Access to Online Journals | Sue Garton | November 4th, 2002

Hi all,

Following Evan's query a while ago about electronic access to journals, I've just been trying out a few things while I'm off campus for a few days to see how far I could get. This is what I've found:

First, you'll definitely need an Athens (NOT Aston) password and you'll find details on how to get this here.

In theory you should then be able to access the journals from the LIS site, though in practice I wasn't very successful (at least with ELTJ) as it was very slow on my home machine. A more efficient way seems to be via BIDS. Once there, log in with your Athens password and click as follows:

Ingenta services > social sciences > education > on-line journals

You then get a very long list of journals in alphabetical order, many not available free and even more probably not relevant. However, you will find ELTJ, System, Language Teaching and quite a few others in all their glory.

Let us know how you get on.

Best,

Sue G
