assignment wordcount exclusions

Wordcount exclusions? | Raymond Sheehan | November 19th, 2002

I seem to recall that in a newsletter some months back, there was a list of what might be excluded from an assignment wordcount. I remember that tables were excluded. But what about transcripts of speech in the body of, say, an IIC assignment? In our Abu Dhabi workshops (which were incredibly useful and enjoyable, by the way, thanks to Sue's facilitating and to Phil's hosting), the question arose and I don't think it ever got definitively answered. I searched at random through some old newsletter and can't find the reference! (Isn't that a familiar tune today?)

Hi Raymond,

I think this is the section from the newsletter in question. Transcripts count as 'data' in what follows.

Assignments

We're often asked about what does and doesn't go into an assignment word count and this perhaps hasn't been very clear up until now. So, we've now had a meeting to clarify this and established guidelines as follows: the word count includes text and quotations but it doesn't include tables, diagrams, references, appendices and data. Obviously this might become a problem for the reader if there are thousands of words of data. If you have a great deal of data, you may need to leave most of it in the appendices and select extracts or examples to weave in the main text.

As we allow a 10% variation from the 3000-4000 range, counting every single word shouldn't be an issue anyway.
