Welcome New Participant | Jerry Talandis Jr. | September 25th, 2003

Hi Jonathan,

This is Jerry Talandis. I'm a CP (course participant) in my third year. I live in Japan. Welcome to the MSc! Nice to see you found this list as well.

This is my first attempt at using this mailing list and I have to say I'm not quite sure how it will work.

Well, everyone subscribing to this discussion list (DL) will have gotten your message. If you want to respond to someone else's message, hit "reply" then type in the DL email address. If you like, you can put the module acronym in the subject heading to let others know the general topic. For example, if you have a question about a task in the Foundation Module, you could type something like, "FND: Task 2.2

Question". Something like that.

I hope you'll feel free to participate in discussions on this list. Another place to have discussions is Phil Quirke's forum. Phil (a former Aston student) maintains this site as part of his Ph.D.

My major problems are trying to motivate myself to self-study, having someone to discuss ideas with and trying to get the logistical side sorted, such as receiving materials, getting hold of books and getting my work handed in.

These are very normal "problems" for new participants. To see how others have faired, check out the following discussions at the Discussion List Archive: Study Skills and Study Skills 2: Starting a Module.

Also, many of the other archived threads in the Foundation category make good reading for beginners.

All in all, my advice is to get connected and stay in touch. Loneliness is the biggest difficulty on this program. Don't let the isolation get to you! With the Internet, it's just an illusion, anyway.

Good luck!

Jerry Talandis Jr.
