is this list too academic?

This list! | Pinkie | April 19th, 2001

IS THE LIST TOO "ACADEMIC"? Francesca suggests that postings may often tend to be too "academic", not enough about personal experience. My view is that "academic" contributions, "personal experience" contributions, and whatever-you-like contributions are all to be welcomed, as many as possible, and from as many people as possible. The great thing about discussion lists is that you can TRASH anything that doesn't interest you.

DO WE "REGULAR POSTERS" HOG THE LIST AND INTIMIDATE OTHER CPs? I really don't think so, though correct me if I'm wrong. If I were in the same room I might try to shout you down; but on a discussion list a simple mouse click sends me hurtling to oblivion! I imagine what all of us find discouraging is public criticism ("How can you be so stupid/unread/boring?", and more subtle ways of saying the same things); also patronizing responses ("Yes, a lot of novices have problems with this..."). But I think people are generally pretty sensitive in these respects.

Still, I certainly wish we regular posters weren't so few. I hereby encourage any sporadic posters reading this to become more regular! (Sounds a bit like an All-Bran advert, doesn't it?)

By the way... Has Francesca's fascinating Study Skills thread died a premature death? There must be lots more useful tips out there.

Best wishes,

Pinkie a.k.a. Tinkerbell Mansfield - as I remarked to Steve the Porn King at the time: with a name like that, my only hope is to aim for one of the really kinky specialist niches!

Thanks to the people who post regularly. It keeps me connected, even though other priorities are taking my time these days. I always check my email even if I am not working on the course.
