presence of tutors on the dl

Presence of tutors on the DL | Steve Mann | July 6th, 2000

As Pinkie says, not all tutors are subscribed to the list. Some time ago I asked the question (to those subscribed) about whether or not they wanted tutors to be 'in' or excluded and there were no strong feelings. So it has evolved as optional for both participants and tutors.

2 thoughts arising:

I do think it might be good to have more sharing of tutor-participant exchanges if you feel they may be 'of use' to other participants. Pinkie's posting provides a good example. I also think that a few more summaries of articles you have read (outside supplied articles) would be potentially useful.

Meanwhile if you feel that this should be exclusively a participant space, Keith and I would be happy to withdraw and respond to individual e-mails that could then be pasted back into the MSc list.

It's nice that there are some tutors who post. It seems to me that the tutors and participants have a good balance here now.

Yeah, it is always interesting to have the input of tutors.

My vote's for a shared tutor/participant forum. The risk of participants deferring to the greater expertise of tutors does not seem to have materialized and the list seems to include a healthy mix of gut reactions and helpful encouragement.

Thanks for the supportive comments - it helps to know that we're welcome on the list.

I have to admit that up to now I've only contributed where I think I'm able to provide (broadly speaking) information and I've tended to hold back from joining debates where opinions are to the fore, even where the topics - and the ideas expressed on the list - are interesting to me. In future I'll probably start dipping my toes into this area and see how things go.

Lurking is fun, but sometimes you really want to get your two penn'orth in.

Cheers

Yes, I think it's a good idea to share the group with the tutors! Teaching is about sharing ideas with fellow professionals - so LET'S!

Even though I do not actively contribute to the discussions happening via this forum, I do enjoy hearing from the tutors when they have something to say. The slightly more 'experienced' view is always welcome.
