GLE/AWD Questions | Elizabeth Renshaw | June 7th, 2005

Good morning everyone,

I have been reading for the GLE module since April and am now getting to grips with some of the ideas and concepts but still have no idea on what I could do for my assignment.  As I was printing out the AWD module I noticed that there seems to be some overlap.  I have two questions/requests for the group:

1.  Could anyone who has finished GLE assignment let me know what you wrote about?

2.  Could anyone who has done both GLE and AWD let me know which you think is the best order to do them in?  Maybe I have started the 'wrong' way round and it could be useful to read the AWD material before writing for the GLE.

Thanks a lot.  Have a great day!

Hi Elizabeth,

You wrote:

I haven't done either of those modules (AWD or GLE), but I don't think there is a "wrong" order of doing them. I think in either case your experience would be different, but not "wrong." What are the pros/cons of doing both courses in each order? AWD>GLE, or GLE>AWD, or both at the same time? Would it be possible to use one data set or situation and do two assignments on it? This is a common practice with other modules, such as ASI & MET. You could, for example, learn about some aspect of how your students learn English in ASI, and then come up with an intervention that could then be the focus of a MET assignment. I'm sure something like that is possible with AWD and GLE.

Anyone out there that has done these modules have a recommendation?

Tag Elizabeth (wanted to share this with the rest of the CP community after accidentally sending it to you off-list).

What a coincidence! I've just finished the GLE and couldn't decide what to write about either. And, I have also just printed out the first unit of the AWD and see some overlap, which i plan to exploit in writing my GLE and AWD assignments. To top it all off, I just returned from 3 weeks in Germany, where you are. Spooky... :-)

On to your questions:

1. Could anyone who has finished GLE assignment let me know what you wrote about.

Although I didn't start an assignment, my ideas/proposals included (Jerry and Martin, along with others, know how I love to come up with at least a dozen proposals): The Role of Motivation in Vocabulary Acquisition, Guessing from Context vs. Dictionary Use, Learner Strategies for Vocabulary Learning

2. Could anyone who has done both GLE and AWD let me know which you think is the best order to do them in.   Maybe I have started the 'wrong' way round and it could be useful to read the AWD material before writing for the GLE.

I have to agree with Jerry that there's no wrong order. As a matter of fact, I think GLE makes for a nice primer for AWD if you look at it from the perspective of moving from the smallest units of language/meaning (e.g., phoneme, lexeme) to the larger items of text.

Viel Glück!

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for the reply.  I guess you are right- maybe there is no 'wrong' order but there may be a 'more logical' order.  Does anyone else have any input?

Anyway, in the absence of further clarity, my mind is temporarily made up.  I will finish reading GLE, in the meantime start reading AWD, and hope for assignment-writing inspiration to hit me at the summer school!

All the best,

Good luck with the assignment! If you get some ideas, consider posting them to the list for feedback, or just to discuss some aspect of your project. I haven't done those modules, but I'm sure others out there who have would chime in.

Another idea: have you had a read through of all the past discussions in the GLE and AWD sections of the DL Archive? Never know- something there might catch your eye. If you find some old thread that seems promising, perhaps you could revisit that topic on this list and bend it towards your needs. Or, there could be some question someone raised that was never followed up on, which you could then develop further. The more people share their assignment ideas on this list, the easier it will be for CPs in the future to catch some inspiration.
