Parts of speech on the bnc | Colin Graham | May 12th, 2005

Hi all

If you're not interested in corpus linguistics jargon, switch off now!!

For those of you who are frustrated, like I was, by not being able to do part of speech searches on the BNC, by the lack of statistical information provided by the BNC's online sample search or by the display of its KWIC as sentence only, rather than COBUILD's centred format and access to t-scores etc., I have some good news.

Mark Davies (Brigham Young University) has a superb online search engine for the entire BNC that relieves a LOT of heartache for anyone who wanted to search for particular POS patterns in the BNC.   The site will allow you to search on specific parts of the corpus, see the examples in a centred KWIC layout and provides frequency data in words per million- amongst other things.

As you can probably tell, I am quite excited by this find!   OK, back to work on the diss now...

Colin
