range software

Range software? | Simon Cole | December 1st, 2002

Hi All,

Do any of you know of software that will check text for low frequency words? For example, if I write a paragraph for my students, and I want to be sure it uses only the first 1,000 most frequently used words, can I run it through a program that will filter out the higher frequency words (and, for that matter, grammatical structures)?

Publishers use this kind of software when they produce their graded readers. I've heard of something called "Range". I'm thinking this software must be freely available from somewhere. No?

How about this program?

Concordance is a program for Windows NT4.0/2000/XP and Windows 95/98/ME, that makes wordlists, concordances, and Web Concordances from your electronic texts.

Concordance is fully copyrighted. You may try it out free of charge for thirty days, but if you wish to keep on using it you must register it with the author and pay the registration fee. By using it you consent to the License Terms and Conditions.

Please note them carefully, as there are restrictions on what you may do with the unregistered version. For example, the unregistered version may not be used for teaching or demonstration purposes or as part of an educational course, and you may not publish or distribute anything made with the unregistered version.   The free trial is granted purely for you to evaluate the software.

Yes, it's the Paul Nation package Danyal talked about.

It's two programs - RANGE and WORDS, zipped with instructions. Based on West's (1953) list and an additional academic word list. It also allows you to set up your own lists for comparison. I can give you a reference if you want Paul Nation's write up about how the lists were constructed but you don't need that to use the program(s).
