teachers using l1 in yl classes
Teachers Using L1 in YL Classes | Katherine A. Johnson | May 31st, 2003
Hi all,
Can anyone suggest any resources where I might find studies or opinions about teachers using L1 with their students? It doesn't have to concentrate on YLs but that would be ideal.
I work in Spain and am trying to do my YL paper on this topic and I am not finding much that is directly related to this issue. I wonder if it has not been explored that much.
Thanks to anyone who can help.
Katherine
L1 use in classes | Simon Cole | May 31st, 2003
Katherine,
There are quite a few books and articles on the topic:
Atkinson, D. (1987) The mother tongue in the classroom: A neglected resource? ELT Journal 41(4)
Atkinson, D. (1993) Teaching nomolingual classes. London: Longman.
The Atkinson book is particularly good if you're looking for a practical guide.
I wrote a paper on this topic myself (not for young learners though). If you want a copy I'll email it to you - there are more leads in the references.
Good luck
Simon
Teachers Using L1 in YL Classes | Susy Schlaufer | May 31st, 2003
Dear Katherine and Simon,
I am very interested in the topic of using L1 in the English classroom as well. There is a book by Sheelagh Deller and Mario Rinvolucri that was published a year or two ago:
USING THE MOTHER TONGUE: Making the most of the learner's language
By the way I am also working on the TYL module. I am writing about using authentic BBC children' s TV programmes.
Simon: If you send a copy of your paper to Katherine, could you send me a copy aswell.
THANKS
